Geton - The X-Factor for Football Songs

The Evening Chronicle ran a piece recently under the headline 'Newcastle United fans sought to pen new chant' and our favourite player Habib Beye got right behind it. You can find the article at: http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/north-east-news/todays-evening-chronicle/2009/02/09/get-tooned-in-72703-22887122/

As we're acutely aware from our meeting with Habib how much he appreciates the fans and in particular the 'Happy Days' chant (Disclaimer - chant is inspiration for this site, it was not started by us...). Quotes directly from the Chronicle highlight this.

“I have always loved the song from Happy Days. I loved the Fonz."

“I thought it was so funny when I first heard the crowd singing their song for me."

“I love it and it always spurs me on to play harder for them.”

Habib told us privately that he can hear the fans, especially along the touchline, and at times he finds it hard not to laugh at the things they say. Apparently on one occasion a fan suggested that Habib carry a weary Geremi back to a defensive position by offering him a 'piggy back'! We can only imaging the language used to convey such a suggestion but Habib admitted that it almost knocked him off his stride as he chuckled to himself...

So the opportunity to impress Habib and write a new football chant is there for all over 16's at http://geton.direct.gov.uk/footie-chants.aspx - and the chants will be judged by pundits including the 'Anfield Rapper' and former Newcastle midfielder John Barnes. We'll be having a go so we'll let you know how you get on.

The prize to us is the glory of having a song chanted at a match, still there's plenty of prizes for the winner, provided by the Football League Trust. Good Luck!

Footnote: GetOn is a Direct.gov initiative to help people brush up on their Maths and English skills (you might have seen their clever adverts with the faces made of hands). We think it's a good idea so visit it anyway, even if you're not interested in writing a song....
