Habib Beye cost £2m from Olympique Marseilles which has got to be some of the best business the club has ever done. This got me thinking. What has £2m got us in the past? Well, going back as for as Dalglish's signings, not very much. Most recently, Beye's Senegal team mate Abdoulaye Faye cost us a couple of million from Bolton. Coincidently, that's the third Senegalese player we've paid that fee for. Amdy Faye came from Portsmouth to join the Souness revultion for £2m. We also paid around £2m for Lua Lua, Diego Gavilan, Silvio Maric, Jon Dahl Tomasson, Andy O'Brien and now reserve full back Stephen Carr. None of these match up favourably with Beye although the £2m for Nicos Dabizas is as close as it gets as the Greek turned in a number of solid performances for the Mags.
Leaving St James' Park for £2m is not uncommon either. We've shipped out Carl Court, Andy O'Brien and Lua Lua for around that amount. Most upsettingly though was David Ginola's £2m move to Spurs in July 1997.
So £2m generally doesn't get you much... All the more reason to hail Habib Beye. The best £2m purchase ever (fact?).
